Answer these questions as completely as possible using specific examples from the text where possible. Each question is worth 25 points; 10 details per answer necessary for full credit. The answers may be neatly handwritten or typed if necessary. Length should be at least a full paragraph per question. You may either turn this in traditionally or post this to the Moodle site (9th Novels -- Final Essay Forum) for 30 bonus points. You may also post this as a comment on the assignments blog under Novels Essay Questions For Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Bonus Opportunity for 50 additional bonus points.

A. Using this novel as your basis, discuss the nature of "good" and "evil," or "the double" and the duality of man's nature, as presented in this novel.

B. Contrast Dr. Jekyll and Dr. Lanyon in their basic responses to scientific medicine, to metaphysics, to the basic nature of evil itself, and to man's duality.

C. At the beginning of the novel, Dr. Jekyll is in total control of Mr. Hyde, yet at the end of the novel, Mr. Hyde is in control of Dr. Jekyll. Show how this reversal came about.

D. Justify Utterson's reluctance to read Lanyon's statement until after "the death or disappearance" of Jekyll.

E. Utterson as a narrator is objective and honest, and yet he often comes to the wrong conclusion about matters such as forgery, Hyde's existence, Jekyll's motives, and other matters. Discuss the character of Utterson and how he is so often misled in his opinions.

With all the new tools for getting information, it really is amazing what email can still provide. I stumbled across this link in an email newsletter. It contains a story about a site called LibraryThing. It seems like an easy way to connect with people who read the same types of things that you do. You enter one book or up to 200 books for free and watch what happens. I look forward to trying this in depth as time allows. Apparently, this will make recommendations based on an algorithm for books you might like to read. It can help you blog. It looks like fun.

Update:

This is really interesting. I added around 20 books into my catalog, and I then started exploring the site. Somebody else had about 2/3 of the books that I had. The best part of the site for me is taking a look at what it recommends. It turns out that it was highly accurate. I already had most of the books it recommended. I could also see where Dan had his concerns. It's like everything else; it all boils down to how you use it.

I stumbled across a great article on social networking this morning in one of my emails. It details the phenomena of social networking. It provides tips, real world stories, and insight into more than just myspace.com. I really think that it is worth looking at if you want to connect with the newest generation of students. It shows that myspace.com is getting more daily hits than ebay.com. Something to think about, isn't it?

Suprglu update

Journalists often revisit stories. Now I can see why. Suprglu is still guilty of many of the same faults as I reported before, but there has been some improvement. It still can take too long to load the page and update things, but it is getter faster. I find myself drawn back to the "class newspaper" that this site generates automatically. It is a conglomeration of the blogs we are using. I think it is pretty cool. You may want to check it out and let me know what you think.

Topic Assignment: SuprGlu

Journey's song "Wheel in the Sky" summarized my feelings for this assignment perfectly in the following lines:

Wheel in the sky keeps on turnin'
I don't know where I'll be tomorrow
Wheel in the sky keeps on turnin'

I've been trying to make it home
Got to make it before too long
I can't take this very much longer.

I could hear the song in my head as I watched the little counter wheel spin around while I waited for feeds to be pulled in. It took about two hours to sign up, get my feeds in, and get my page to be visible to the outside world. I also did not get all my classmates included because of a limited number of feeds allowed. Contacting the factory was problematic. I had 65 windows pop up when I used Internet Explorer. Firefox said no way. I ended up going into my email and using the link provided in there. I also had problems viewing everything in Internet Explorer. The aforementioned song keeps playing in my head.

In all fairness, the concept of SuprGlu is great. This is a place to put together your own "newspaper" on the topic of your choosing. Some of the sites that pulled up were very interesting: Library Clips, Library Blogs, and Boggled by Chaos. In the hours that I spent making a class site, my results were not as polished. There were ways to add links and change the style sheet that I did not have the patience for quite honestly. Some people have had a great deal more luck in working with this site as is evidenced in the entry SuprGlu is SuprCool from thesocialsoftwareweblog. Also, the fact that SuprGlu is being run on a single server and may be slow is referenced in several locations on the SuprGlu site. With all that said, this has the potential to be a cool product given time, more servers, and more bandwidth. For free, you really can't complain.

The meat of the assignment was to ascertain the viability of this site's use in education. I really can't recommend it for that at this time. It simply is too slow for kids. We live in a world of instantaneous feedback. Scene changes in most commercials are about a second. Kids simply will not wait 15 to 30 seconds for sites to load. They will not take hours to build a site. This has the potential of putting a lot of information together on a single site quickly and easily. It just needs more time and to work out some of its growing pains. I will continue to tinker with this product in the hope that things get better. My recommendation is to wait for now.

Capturing Video

A neat program to capture video or audio called FRAPS. The download location for the freeware version is as follows http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=149 or http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3934.html for the shareware version. The shareware version is much easier to use. You have to pick a mirror site and download it. You install the file and run it. You then hit F9 to start the capture of video and F9 to end the capture of the video. You can find the video in the C:\Fraps\ and find your video clips. You can then use the video offline. It is a workaround to a bandwidth problem. There may be some copyright issues involved.
